IVF vs. IUI: Which Is Right For You?
The fertility care journey always starts with a fertility evaluation and testing, but from there, a myriad of potential paths to parenthood. Two of the most common fertility treatment paths are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). While both can significantly improve your chances of conceiving, not everyone will benefit from IUI and not everyone will need IVF. Regardless of your circumstances, it can be helpful to understand these procedures as early as possible so that you can make an empowered decision when the time comes.
Understanding Intrauterine Insemination
IUI, or artificial insemination, is often the first fertility treatment recommended to aspiring parents. With IUI, specially prepared semen containing a concentrated number of high-quality sperm is placed into an ovulating woman’s uterus, enabling it to reach her fallopian tubes and eggs more easily and quicker than through natural insemination. IUI is commonly recommended to aspiring parents experiencing a wide range of fertility issues, including unexplained fertility, genetic conditions, ovulation issues, cervical conditions, or mild male infertility. It’s also often used by same-sex lesbian couples and single aspiring mothers using a sperm donor.
Understanding In Vitro Fertilization
With IVF, eggs and sperm are retrieved from the aspiring parents (or donors, if necessary) and combined outside of the parents’ bodies in a laboratory. Once an embryo develops, it’s transferred into the recipient’s uterus. IVF is considered by many to be the gold standard of fertility care and is often recommended in many scenarios, including:
- Diminished, or low ovarian reserve
- Fertility issues involving ovulation or the uterus
- A lack of fallopian tubes or tubal disease untreatable with surgery
- A male factor contributing to infertility, like low sperm count
- Genetic abnormalities causing pregnancy loss
- Unexplained infertility
- LGBTQ+ family building
- Single aspiring parents
IUI and IVF: Success Rates Compared
IUI is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure, making it an attractive option for many aspiring parents. However, compared to IVF, it has a significantly lower rate of success.
It’s important to keep in mind that, with both IUI and IVF, success rates depend on a wide range of factors, including:
- Age of the woman
- Ovulatory function and ovarian reserve
- Sperm count and motility
- Uterine abnormalities
- Tubal patency
- Underlying fertility issues
- Endometrial receptivity
IUI and IVF: A Financial Comparison
The financial aspect of fertility care is undoubtedly one of the biggest things that aspiring parents consider when first planning their family-building journey. IUI is typically considered to be more affordable, as it’s minimally invasive and less advanced compared to IVF. Between the medications, technology, and techniques required for IVF, it’s unsurprising that it would come with a higher price tag. That being said, IVF can still be affordable for many aspiring parents.
